The clear green waters of the Azmak River at Akyaka

Hidden Gems of Turkey · 3 sites

Secret Coasts & Islands

Turkey's coastline is long enough to keep a few secrets. There's a village you can only reach by boat or on foot, a river so clear you can count the stones on its bed, and an island in the northern Aegean where the old Greek villages still sit quietly on the hills. Come for the water. Stay for the pace.

Where the River Meets the Sea

The Azmak is a short river, barely a few kilometres from spring to sea, and so cold and clear that the water weeds look painted on. Small wooden boats drift along it under the plane trees, and the riverside restaurants serve whatever came in that morning. Akyaka itself is a village of wooden-balconied houses at the head of the Gulf of Gökova. Nobody hurries here, and after a day or two neither will you.

The Mediterranean's Hidden Coast

No road reaches Kaleköy. You arrive by boat, or on foot along the Lycian Way, and the first thing you see is a castle on the hill and Lycian tombs standing half in the sea. Climb up for the view, then paddle a kayak along the shore of Kekova, where the walls and stairways of a sunken town lie just below the surface. Evenings are for fish, a glass of something cold and a sky full of stars.

An Island Lost in Time

Turkey's largest island feels like a well-kept secret. In the old Greek villages of Zeytinli and Tepeköy, stone houses with blue shutters climb the hillsides, and coffee is still pounded in a mortar the old way. Drive out to empty beaches on the windy south coast, eat goat's cheese and island olive oil for lunch, and watch the sun go down over the Aegean with hardly another soul around.
